In the Make and Take tent this year we found out all about a mischievous spider and how she tricked the animals of the jungle into thinking that melons talked!
We also got to find out about how the lady got into the moon all those moons ago in ancient china!

The William Hogarth Mural

My method of creating this mural was to include the entire school in the process. Each person had the opportunity to draw pictures that were relating to themes in Hogarth's work. I then selected drawings to create the composition for the mural and finally connected the work with a narrative which flows across the top in the shape of a yellow ribbon from beginning to end.
Please see below for some of the original drawings and then the final mural.
Our mural has been inspired by the London artist , William Hogarth and london life in the 18th century.
Together, with the mural artist, Chloe Harbour, we looked at some of the people in William Hogarth's work and talked about what they were doing in some of his pictures. It was interesting and fun to compare the differences and similarities in london life and human behaviour of today to 300 years ago when Hogarth painted his pictures. We found the big wigs with all their expensive jewels very funny and thought about what expensive things we would put in our wigs if big wigs were still fashionable today!
We chose topics and themes from Hogarth pictures. These were: owners and their pets school and learning, dressing up, going out and having fun, food and snacks, people in london, rich and poor and transport in london.
From these themes we then drew our own 2014 Hogarthian pictures of what we all do in London now.

Being with people with dementia

31/3/2014

There is a poetry and beauty of working creatively with elders and people with dementia.  We can often be left with small, soft lace like impressions. These traces hold their own beauty.

I recall partner dancing with a woman during a session, she gently led me by her hand and within her slightest movements she signaled to me the memories and joy of her dancing years. I witnessed and shared her delight during our fragile dance together.

The art, creativity and happiness of a person’s life are revealed as we play together outside the confines of space and time. This I find to be a beautiful collaboration, which exists moment by moment. Stepping into this momentary world and engaging with whatever you find there can be joyful. The visible world, as Plato pointed out, is a veil concealing truth.

There was a very serious moment the other day in our Chinese Folktale  - The Lady of the Moon -  Would you like to live on the Moon for the whole of eternity with a bunny rabbit for company?

'Soon the elixir began to take effect and Chang’e felt herself being lifted toward Heaven. She decided to live on the moon because it is nearest to earth.
Houyi was very sad while watching as Chang’e flew off to the moon. He called out her name to the moon as it grew very round and bright.'

Reminiscence holidays with Grandparents and Grandchildren from America

Picture
With my intergenerational and reminiscence skills added to this my tour guiding experience and the work I do with younger people. I have had the good fortune to perform three roles for the Americans whilst they are on tour with Road Scholars educational touring adventures.

The tours daily schedule was rehearsing, of which I was assistant director, touring London in the afternoons and in the evenings going to a selection of West End plays. Built around this was the work and fun times I was leading with the younger people.

I have been engaged in this multi disciplined way with Road scholars and age exchange for the last three years - Assistant director, group leader and youth co-coordinator all in a days work!

This work has given me insight into life in America and the life of Americans. Sharing their moments of life and humanity is a privilege and a joy. All the wonderful people I have come into contact with on these tours are positive and outstandingly good at ‘having a go’ some of them have never done any thing like this in their lives before and yet they all rise to the challenge. Without this generosity of spirit and openheartedness these plays would not go on. Thankyou

paddling to the Palais - a reminiscence production

Picture
"Paddling to the Palais" - Trinity Laban Conservatoire of music and Dance and Age Exchange production with elders and people with dementia.

An exploration into creating a choreographic, musical and dramatic piece which first and foremost supports and involves people with dementia. The main aim of the work is to engage and collaborate with all participants inclusively with a view to producing a theatrical presentation where all company members are equally involved in the process and finished piece.

The presentation was created from the memories and reminiscences of visits to the seaside and evenings out at the dance halls shared by the participants and from which the company created the movement and song sequences.

please see website www.artinthecommunity.com for a excerpt from the show, post production
